Labels, that’s all we seem to care about. Squeezing ourselves into tiny boxes that create more divisions than similarities. In a world that is torn apart by divisions do we really need to focus on more differences, when the reality is that we are all the same. We are all humans. CIS, trans or non-binary, they are just words used to create tribal differences, and like tribes each fight for superiority instead of sharing the benefits of unity. Only humans fixate on the sex lives of strangers, only we care about how someone presents themselves. There are more important things in this world to worry about. Your gender does not define you, and you should not let it. You are in control of your own life. Focus solely on what your place in the world is, and let others focus solely on theirs.
Thoughts on Gender was written for SLAMinutes does Gender Spectrum event, and was one of thirty performances by different artists speaking for one minute each about their perspectives on gender.
